Diploma of Nursing leads to new opportunities
After being a stay-at-home mum for several years, Kylee Murtagh is excited to have recently re-entered the workforce as an Enrolled Nurse Screener with the Healthy Hearing program at Mater Mothers’ Hospitals, following her graduation from the Diploma of Nursing in December 2017.
When Kylee completed her studies, she pictured herself as a nurse in a hospital ward, but her new role is evidence of the versatility of the Diploma of Nursing qualification.
“I never would have thought of working in hearing, but I’m really glad the position became available and that I applied, as I’m really enjoying it,” Kylee said.
“As a nurse screener, I screen the hearing of babies born at Mater Mothers’ Hospitals before they go home with their parents.
“In most cases, the baby’s hearing receives a pass, and it’s great to be able to provide reassurance for those parents who might have been a bit nervous about the result. One or two babies in every 1000 won’t receive a pass and will need to be referred for a second screening. It’s important for me to communicate the next steps and answer their questions so that they’re informed.”
When Kylee completed her Diploma of Nursing, she felt confident to tackle any role as an enrolled nurse, thanks to the simulated learning experiences offered by Mater Education.
“The simulation classes were great preparation for my clinical placements, because everything was familiar once I got into the ‘real life’ setting. They’ve also helped ease the transition into my new role with the Healthy Hearing program.”
Kylee is one of five Mater Education Diploma of Nursing graduates to have recently been employed by the Mater Mothers’ Hospitals’ Healthy Hearing program.
