From ICU Clinical Nurse Consultant to savvy podcaster, Jesse shares his passion for education

News

We are incredibly excited to have Jesse Spurr join us for the Educating the Educator Symposium in November and he is equally as eager to share his wealth of knowledge and experience with attendees in November.

“I have always been inspired by the Mater Education learning philosophy and I’m excited to see this embodied in a symposium.”

A sport and functional fitness obsessive, Jesse classes himself a lifelong student of teaching, learning, health and human performance.

“I came to nursing after completing studies in exercise science. I had an accelerated pathway into clinical education roles, commencing undergrad nursing student facilitation in my third year post graduation and then taking a backfill role as an ICU nurse educator after only three and a half years of working as a nurse. From there I moved into a simulation educator role within a small simulation centre and found a passion for in-situ simulation and debriefing development.”

“I’d always been more comfortable as facilitator rather than presenter, but developed a deeper understanding of this. Through all of these roles I have carried a profound interest in communication, social learning and supporting teams with effective debriefing.”

He says simulation education changed the way he taught and his advice for people wanting to become an educator is simple.

“Spend some time thinking about your personal guiding principles. We can get swept up by career progression and conversely not knowing ‘what we want to be when we grow up’. I think more than ever it is important to think about what are the things that are important to you in work.”

If you’d love to hear more about Jesse’s experience and advice for fellow educators, join us at the Educating the Educator Symposium in November!
