Emily's dream of a healthcare career is coming true

News

Carindale Year 11 student Emily Woolard has landed a job at Mater Private Hospital Redland as an Assistant in Nursing, all before graduating from high school.

The 18-year-old St Thomas More College student has already successfully completed a Certificate II in Health Support Services and a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance with Mater Education.

“Thanks to the Mater Education school-based training program, I have not only completed two qualifications but I have also landed a job.” she said.

Ms Woolard is supporting nursing staff on shift as part of Mater Private Hospital Redland’s casual pool, all while juggling her final year of high school studies.

“I enjoy getting to talk to people. I’ve always wanted to help people and my job at Mater gives me the opportunity to do that.

“Since I was little, I've wanted to do nursing. Both my mum and grandmother are nurses and have been a huge inspiration for me.

“Them, and TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy.”

Ms Woolard completed her Certificate II and Certificate III courses through Mater Education’s Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) program which has an external health hub on site at St Thomas More College.

The hub allows students in Year 10, 11 and 12 to gain nationally recognised healthcare qualifications while remaining on campus and completing their high school education.

Ms Woolard said she hoped to head to university next year to continue her studies in the healthcare field.

“I will be pursuing a Bachelor of Nursing, with the goal of eventually completing an honours degree as well,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to what the future has in store!”
