A change of pace for Diploma of Nursing student, Chris
Here at Mater Education, we are inspired by the diverse motivations that lead our students to pursue their nursing career. We recently sat down with Chris, a current Diploma of Nursing student and student representative, who has been on an adventurous path towards healthcare.
Chris joined the Defence Force as a late teen, travelling the world from Wagga Wagga to Afghanistan, but the turning point in his career occurred in Tully, far north Queensland. It was here in the Jungle Training Wing that he first got the notion to do nursing after a medic at the centre, who had been nursing for 15 years, took Chris under his wing as his assistant. He taught him how to conduct observations, perform manual blood pressure measurement and a range of other nursing responsibilities.
Chris then moved to Adelaide, completing a course to become a Combat First Aider, which ultimately led to his decision to end his 11 years of service in the army and pursue his nursing dream.
“A family friend recommended Mater Education. She had just graduated and couldn’t speak highly enough of the educators and the program”.
“Something that really drew me to studying a Diploma of Nursing at Mater Education was the fact that you got to learn in a ward.”
“I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. The educators are what make the Diploma. You get a personalised view. The amount of time the educators are willing to give you to ensure you get the best experience shows their passion for healthcare and why they do what they do. You aren’t just a number.”
Once Chris graduates, he plans on completing his studies to become a Registered Nurse. “I’d really love to become a Registered Nurse in the reserves—to go back and do my part to give back”.
