Graduate Spotlight: Neonatal Critical Care Unit Graduate Enrolled Nursing Program
2016 Mater Education Diploma of Nursing graduate Emma Petersen has started her new career in Mater’s Neonatal Critical Care Unit Graduate Enrolled Nursing Program. Emma reflects on being part of something that makes a difference every day and how Mater has shaped her career so far.
Emma’s decision to pursue nursing came about as she wanted more out of a job. With the support of her family Emma left her administration role, and in 2016 completed her Diploma of Nursing with Mater Education.
Emma says, “My experience with Mater has been wonderful. I enjoy the ethos of Mater. The underlining values and mission of the hospital resonate with my own values.”
“I thought I was too old to start study but I've learnt that you're never too old to start something new.”
Mater's Graduate Programs for registered nurses, midwives and enrolled nurses assists graduates with the transition from study to patient care. The aim is to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge required to assist them in becoming exceptional nurses and midwives.
Emma chose to undertake her Graduate Nurse program at Mater because of the unrivalled opportunities offered to enrolled nurses, and her enjoyment working with babies and families.
“The Neonatal Critical Care Unit Graduate Program is a new opportunity for Enrolled Nurses. I never thought I'd be able to work with babies so soon, however I now am and I love it.”
“During my placement as a student I did two days on a postnatal ward at Mater Mothers’, I felt like I had arrived in Disneyland. I have heard some nurses say that everyone has their own niche in nursing and that it will be that one place you find that you just love. For me it's working with babies and their families.”
On being an exceptional nurse, Emma credits her educators and the constant opportunities for development provided by Mater, including access to the world class simulation facilities that allow Mater's graduates to develop within a supportive learning environment to provide exceptional care to patients.
“We've been provided with many simulated learning experiences to grow our knowledge base. Having the opportunity to give things a go pushes me outside my comfort zone and helps me to gain new knowledge and skills through hands on interactive learning.”
