Couple take on pathology course together

News

Amanda and James Robertson have been married for 22 years and have done everything together, except studying.

That all changed when they both decided to enrol in a Certificate III in Pathology Collection with Mater Education.

The couple decided to act on their aspirations to learn more about the medical field by signing up to the 15-week course at South Brisbane which wraps up at the end of this year.

James said they've both enjoyed a change in career.

"I was a chef for just over 11 years and then I was a bus driver for 12 years and Amanda worked in the corporate field," he said.

"It's been amazing doing the course together, we talk about it on the way home and we've even made a fake arm at home so we can practice."

Amanda, who has been recently working as an Assistant in Nursing, said she's found her passion in healthcare.

"It's been a really supportive learning environment here and we have a diversity of culture and age in our class," she said.

"Every morning we walk past the ambulances at Emergency and it feels real - being in a hospital setting is beneficial and the facilities here are amazing."

Amanda and James said they're looking forward to their plans for 2023 after completing the Certificate.

"I have a genuine desire to help people and I'm planning to do the Diploma of Nursing next year with Mater Education," Amanda said.

"But before that, we are travelling over to Cambodia together in January to volunteer our time. They have a huge need for medical staff over there.

"The great thing about healthcare is that you can work anywhere in the world."
